Esperanças e fracassos dos retirantes em Vidas Secas e Morte Severina.

Abstract

In Barren Lives and Death and life of a Severino we observe narratives marked by regionalism, representative of the suffering experienced by residents of the Brazilian Northeast due to the phenomenon that devastates this region: drought. The characters Fabiano, from Barren Lives and Severino, from Death and life of a Severino, undertake a journey in search of better living conditions, where both characters face the consequences of this climatic phenomenon. In this context, this research realised that Neutralized Idealism in the characters' lives is associated with their conditions as poor men. The events that occur in each one's life characterize the process of having the dream of fixing their lives failing due to the primary condition that affects them of being poor and oppressed by their miserable living condition, which prevents them from freeing themselves to live a better life. To theoretically support this work, we used as a basis the studies of Paes (1990) and Pontes (2014) on the Poor Men and Neutralized Idealism, the considerations of Torres (2012) on the work Death and life of a Severino and the studies of Lima (2013) about the novel Barren Lives.
