Abstract

This study investigates the (de)valuation of women in the practice of vaquejada in Brazil's Northeast, especially after this activity was elevated to the status of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Brazil in 2016. The research addresses the challenges faced by women vaqueiras, including the lack of recognition and the barriers imposed by a socially masculine environment. The analysis of gender dynamics in Northeastern vaquejada reveals the persistent gender inequality and the marginalization of female competitors, highlighting the urgent need to promote greater equity and recognition for vaqueiras. Understanding and valuing women's contributions to vaquejada can bring significant benefits, such as promoting equal opportunities, respecting gender diversity, and strengthening ties with regional tradition and identity. This study suggests that the effective inclusion of women in vaquejada is essential for the development and sustainability of this important cultural practice, fostering equality of opportunities and respect for gender diversity.
