Mulheres nas engenharias: a participação feminina na Escola Politécnica da Paraíba (1952-1974).

Abstract

This work is the result of the project " Women in Engineering : Studies of History , Science and Technology " developed as a student PIBIC/UFCG-2012- 2013 . This project aimed to promote research to identify women who were part of the Polytechnic School of Paraíba as students and / or teachers . The Polytechnic

School of Paraiba was the first institution of higher education in Campina Grande- PB to consolidate. Founded in 1952 with the Civil Engineering course , had its first

expansion with the creation of courses in Electrical Engineering (1963 ) and Mechanical Engineering (1966 ) . The creation and consolidation of this institution of higher education occurred at a time of growth in the city of Campina Grande and also built in this town of thought and imagination of the modern city. The Polytechnic was recognized in the late fifties as one of the best higher education institutions in the Northeast , thus attracting an audience of students at his most masculine but also a female audience . The challenge of this research was to investigate the participation of women at the Polytechnic , in an era where women were little involved in public space and restricted their presence in the area of technological knowledge and engineering , an area regarded as culturally masculine. In our research we use as basis the documentation of the Polytechnic School of Paraíba, located in the General Archives of the Federal University of Campina Grande ( UFCG ), and use of oral history methodology for conducting interviews with former students and / or teachers Polytechnic whose collaboration allows us to advance in knowledge of issues of everyday Polytechnic in the period surveyed , and also examine women's participation in engineering courses.
