Tradução audiovisual: uma análise dos marcadores culturais nas legendas da Série Insecure.

Abstract

The aim of this monograph was to analyze the Brazilian Portuguese subtitles of the cultural markers in the TV Show Insecure, focusing on four characters, Issa, Molly, Tiffany and Kelli. To achieve this aim, the cultural markers in English were identified and classified into five categories; then, the translation strategies used were analyzed based on Venuti’s (2019, 2021) theory of Domestication and Foreignization. As theoretical framework, the field of Audiovisual Translation was studied, based on Diaz Cintas (2005, 2008), Delabastita (1989) e Nobre (2002), followed by Subtitling studies by Diaz Cintas and Remael (2021), Nobre (2002), and Viccino (2007). The next theory to be studied was Venuti’s (2019, 2021) Foreignization and Domestication. Finally, the definition of cultural markers was discussed, based on Aubert (2008), Guedes and Mozzillo (2014) and Marques (2018). In this monograph, cultural markers were classified into five categories: language, brands, fashion, art and culinary. Methodologically, this is research of a quali-quantitative nature and the corpus is composed of subtitles of three episodes of the TV Show Insecure, from the first three seasons. For the data collection and generation, episodes focusing on the analyzed characters were selected. The subtitles in English (Source Language - SL) and in Brazilian Portuguese (Target Language - TL) were collected from the Netflix streaming service, to expose and characterize the markers, creating a table in which the parallel corpus was inserted, with the subtitles in the SL and TL, highlighting the category which the marker belongs and the identified translation strategies. Results present the analyzed episodes involving 46 cultural markers identified and most of them belong to the language markers category. Related to the translation strategies identified, in addition to the practices of Foreignization and Domestication, it was also identified that some terms were omitted, being the second most used practice, just behind the process of Domestication.
